Spaced repetition, explained without the jargon

Why cramming fades, why timing matters, and how a useful gap between reviews makes recall more durable.

Here is an unfair fact about memory: how hard you work at remembering something matters far less than when you come back to it.

Two people learn the same forty names. One repeats the list in a single sitting until it feels solid. The other returns to it in several shorter sessions over the following days and weeks. Across many kinds of learning, the second pattern supports better long-term retention than massing the repetitions together; the size of the advantage depends on the material and the timing.

That's spaced repetition. This article explains why it works, in plain language, with no jargon.

Forgetting has a shape

In the 1880s a German psychologist called Hermann Ebbinghaus memorised long lists of nonsense syllables — nonsense specifically, so nothing could connect to anything he already knew — and measured how much survived over time.

What he found is consistent enough that we still teach the broad shape, though there is no single forgetting curve that fits every person and every kind of material. Forgetting is often fastest soon after learning and then slows; meaningful connections, prior knowledge, sleep, and later retrieval all change the curve.

Two things follow, and they're the basis of everything below.

The first day matters enormously. The steepest part of the curve is right at the start, which is why a name reviewed that same evening does so much better than one reviewed for the first time a week later. By then there's often nothing left to reinforce.

Every time you successfully bring something back, the curve gets flatter. This is the good bit. Recall a name after a day and it doesn't just reset — it decays more slowly than it did the first time. Recall it again after three days and it flattens further. The interval keeps stretching: a day, a few days, a week, a fortnight, a month, several months. Each visit costs the same few seconds and buys steadily more time.

That's the free lunch. The work doesn't accumulate. It thins out.

Why cramming feels like it works, and doesn't

Cramming produces a very convincing sensation of knowing.

Go through a team list twenty times in a row and by the end you'll recognise every name instantly. It feels finished. But what you're experiencing is familiarity, not memory — the names are still in short-term storage, and recognising something you saw ninety seconds ago is nearly free. It tells you almost nothing about whether you'll produce that name in a corridor next Thursday.

This is the trap: the method that feels most effective while you're doing it is reliably the one that works worst later. Spaced practice feels worse. You come back on Friday, you've lost a few, it's slow and uncomfortable. That discomfort isn't a sign it's going badly. It's the sign something real is happening — actual work, rather than skimming material that's still fresh.

Researchers call these "desirable difficulties": conditions that make learning feel harder in the moment and turn out to make it stick. Annoying, because it means your instincts about your own progress are systematically backwards.

Reaching beats re-reading

The second half of it, and just as important as timing.

There are two things you can do with a name. Look at it again — face and name together, a passive top-up. Or look at the face, deliberately try to produce the name from nothing, and then check.

The second usually supports longer retention better than restudying alone. The act of reaching — the effortful hunt through your memory — is itself a learning event, especially when you then check the answer.

Failed retrieval can still help when it is followed promptly by corrective feedback. The correction matters: an unanswered or confidently wrong attempt is not automatically useful.

There's a practical version of this: always try before you check. Whatever you're learning, guess first and then check. It costs two seconds and makes the review an act of retrieval rather than recognition alone.

The sweet spot: just before you'd forget

So when should you come back?

Too soon and a review may be less efficient for long-term retention because the answer is still fresh, though short early steps can help establish a new memory. Cramming packs many repetitions into that easy window and can create a misleading feeling of mastery.

Too late and retrieval may fail, increasing how much relearning is needed. That does not mean all earlier work is gone, but it is an inefficient way to keep something available.

The practical target is the awkward space in between: enough delay that finding the name takes genuine effort, but not so much that every attempt becomes a complete relearn. No universal fixed interval hits that point for every name, which is why schedules adapt after each answer.

You can use recall effort as a rough signal, not a diagnosis. An instant answer may tolerate a longer next gap; a hesitant or failed answer usually needs a shorter one.

Doing it by hand

You don't need any software for this. The manual version is straightforward:

  • Review the same day, ideally within a few hours. This is the highest-value review you will ever do.
  • Then the next day, or the day after.
  • Then about a week later.
  • Then a fortnight. Then a month. Then a few months.
  • When you miss one, shorten its gap. Send it back to a day or two and let it climb again from there.
  • Always try before you look.
  • Keep confusable items apart. Two Sarahs one after the other teaches you the confusion. Space them out.

Written down like that it looks easy, and for one list of ten things, it is. Get a notebook, keep the dates, done.

Where it falls apart

The method isn't hard. The bookkeeping is.

The moment you have forty names rather than ten, every one is on its own schedule. Priya is on a two-day gap because you keep losing her. Marcus is solid and doesn't need looking at for a month. Six new people arrived on Tuesday and are all sitting at the top of the cliff. Now work out, from a paper list, who needs seeing today.

Nobody sustains that. Not because it's conceptually difficult, but because it's tedious admin performed daily — the single most reliably abandoned category of self-improvement there is.
